Home Use with EEGer

At-Home neurofeedback trusted by thousands of clients & clinicians.

Why Choose EEGer?

Clinicians choose Home Use with EEGer because it provides effective results and is easy to implement into an existing practice.

Clients choose Home Use with EEGer because it has a low monthly cost and ensures they receive effective training from a trained clinician.

Clinical Supervision

Training plans are created by a trained clinician. They help evaluate your needs and choose the specific type of training for your needs.

Many clinicians also offer guided training by remotely connecting to the Home Use system, allowing for real-time adjustments.

Self-Paced

Many clinicians train their Home-Users to operate the system on their own or with the help of a family member.

Training can occur in a comfortable environment at times where training is most effective, rather than when an appointment is available.

Empowering

Home training can be a powerful and transformative experience for clients unable to see a clinician in-person, as it allows for them to have an active role in their own healing process.

Convenient

EEGer can be installed onto most existing home computers, making it easy to get started. Files are sent via the cloud, so no waiting for emails or need to manually download files.

 Frequently Asked Questions

  • The process of getting started is relatively straight-forward:

    1. Find an EEGer Clinician to work with. We can help with this. If you already work with an EEGer provider, ask about Home Use.

    2. Purchase an equipment bundle from EEG Store, or use equipment provided by your clinician.

    3. Meet with your clinician to prepare the system and learn the basics.

    4. Begin Training!

  • If you already see a clinician who offers EEGer, ask about Home Use training. It can be added to their EEGer system at no cost to the clinician, so many are happy to offer it.

If you do not see an EEGer clinician, you may be able to find one in your area. Some clinicians also work with clients across state lines or in other countries.

We’re always happy to help connect clients with clinicians who can help them. If you’re unable to make a connection, please contact us for help!

  • Short Version: EEGer allows for more effective training (comparable to in-person training) and gives more control throughout the process than other remote solutions.

Long Version: We believe the most important part of remote training is effective results. EEGer allows clients to use the same software and equipment that clinicians use, and makes it easy for the supervising clinician to help.

Remote training with other systems typically means using a separate program and equipment. These offer fewer features than their clinical counterparts, while further limiting control over the training process. They often require the clinician to learn a new software and interface. To overcome this, they further reduce functionality so that it is easier for clinicians to learn.

    EEGer is different:

    • The clinician you are working with is trained and experienced with neurofeedback.

    • The training plan is created in the same way as in-person training. EEGer doesn’t impose restrictions or artificial limits..

    • Files are transferred using an online cloud, making the system easy to use.

    • The clinician can adjust permissions and add restrictions as needed to help guide training.

Because the Clinical and Home Use software is the same when you choose EEGer, there’s effectively no learning curve for clinicians. This makes it easy for a clinician to help troubleshoot issues or connect with the Home Use system to provide guided training.

Most importantly, Home Use systems have access to all the same functionality and real-time controls as Clinical systems. This includes the same in-depth replay and review modules, so clinician’s can review data and make decisions easily from their own system or while connected to the Home Use system.

  • We have heard from clinicians is that Home Use with EEGer is the most effective remote training options available, but we do not believe that remote training is a full substitute for in-person training.

Training in-person allows for a clinician to better tell how a client is performing and responding throughout a session. It also allows for a more direct and meaningful connection that screens and virtual meetings cannot provide.

While a clinician can remotely connect to a Home Use system to control training in real-time, this can be more difficult if the client is less comfortable with technology. It can also be distracting to the client’s training if they’re having to press buttons or troubleshoot issues before or during a session.

If the client is running sessions on their own, or with the help of a family member, the effectiveness of training can be limited by their ability to accurately place electrodes, or due to less knowledge about neurofeedback.

There are ways this can be helped, like the clinician setting the thresholds to automatically adjust without the client needing to press buttons. They can also use virtual meetings to help make sure electrodes are placed correctly, and have regular check-ins to make sure they’re seeing the results that they would expect.

In our opinion, it makes sense that at-home training is less effective than in-person sessions. Clinicians are well-trained in how to use the system, and many have studied for years to understand EEG and how the brain responds to feedback. If any person could pick up a computer and replicate these results out-of-the-box without any training of their own, we would question the honesty of the results being reported, or the real effectiveness of the system.

What is important is that any amount of training is better than no training. If a client is unable to visit a clinician in-person due to travel times, scheduling conflicts, or conditions that do not allow for it, Home Use training is the best solution available.

Clients are able to train more often with Home Use and in comfortable environments. They can be remotely supported by their clinicians, who are able to work with and help more clients compared to in-person training.

From the clinician’s perspective, Home Use is also a benefit because they see less ‘no-show’ appointments, so can help more clients get better!

  • The equipment is the largest initial investment, which comes out to ~$1,000. This will vary depending on the type of amplifier you choose, if you already have a Windows computer to use the software with, or if your clinician has spare equipment to loan/rent to you.

A license to use the software is $95.00 a month, which allows for unlimited sessions.

EEGer does not limit the number of clients that can use a Home Use system, so if your family has multiple members who are receiving training, there is no extra cost (many systems charge by the session or number of clients).

The last expense to consider is consultation with an EEGer clinician. This varies from clinician-to-clinician depending on your region, type of training, and how involved the clinician is in the process.

There is no way we can confidently estimate what this may cost, but generally we have heard that clinicians offer at-home training at the same or at a lower rate than in-person training.

We are working toward ways to help clients find clinicians and compare session rates online, but we’re not quite ready to roll this out yet. We recommend contacting local clinicians and asking what they charge for Home Use training.

  • If your client is purchasing the equipment, all you need from EEGer is a new keyfile to unlock the ability to create Home Use files.

Many clinicians choose to purchase the equipment, such as the software license, amplifier, and electrodes. When they have a client who wants to pursue Home Use training, they rent or lease the equipment out as part of their treatment. This simplifies the billing process and allows clinicians to make back the investment into equipment.

To help clinicians understand the Home Use process and add it to their practice, we offer courses and webinars through EEG Learn that breaks down the business side of Home Use, as well as actually connecting with and training clients.

  • Neurofeedback is a powerful treatment modality that allows the brain to modify its own regulation. If done incorrectly, it’s possible for training to result in more dysregulation.

Thankfully, the clinicians who work with EEGer are all well-trained in how to use the system and to create effective training plans. Neurofeedback with EEGer is not a ‘one size fits all’ approach, meaning that clinicians tailor training for each client to achieve optimal results.

With regular check-ins throughout the training process, and the ability for the clinician to limit functionality within the software to prevent accidental inputs or misuse, it’s easy for clinicians to identify and correct any steps in the wrong direction.

  • For troubleshooting Home Use issues, the supervising clinician is the first line of defense. Not only are they familiar with using EEGer, but they know the clients they work with well. They can help learn how to use the software, navigate obstacles and questions that come up, and translate technical instructions in ways that clients understand.

If problems persist, we have clear step-by-step instructions on our website. This allows issues to be fixed at all times, even if the clinician or support staff are not available.

EEGer is known for it’s technical support, which extends to Home Use. If problems persist, we’re happy to get remotely connected and to help troubleshoot problems. This is not an inconvenience to us, and is what we love to do!

When scheduling an appointment, we’ll often ask for the Supervising Clinician to be connected during these appointments — we’re skilled in troubleshooting technology, while they’re skilled in making sure that their clients are well-advocated for and that the steps we’re taking make sense.
